THE STORY

After one of the Expendables is badly injured while tackling arms boss Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), leader Barney Ross (Stallone) recruits a new team of young mercenaries. But when things go wrong, he has to call on the old guard for back-up.

THE VERDICT

The fact the Expendables dinosaurs are getting on a bit is easily solved in this noisy and action-packed sequel... simply get more of them!
With Wesley Snipes and Harrison Ford added to the line-up, along with four younger wannabes, the bullet count and general mayhem is racked up even more.
Fans of the series, which is all about big muscles, bigger guns and even bigger explosions, may find it very familiar.
And it is similar to The Expendables 2, except Bruce Willis has been dropped. Still, it manages to deliver just what fans of old-style muscular action films will be after.
Though there’s less blood and gore this time around, the body count is still high and the lumbering band of heavyweight heavy-hitters takes on a whole army. They’re helped by new addition Wesley Snipes, who brings an edginess, but Harrison Ford does little for the film – yes, he has some nice lines, but he doesn’t even get to shoot a gun.
A grinning Gibson is well cast as the villain who helped form the team but went rogue and was thought to have died.
He has fun with his larger-than-life character, and his fight with Stallone’s tough-but-thoughtful Barney is well staged.
Of the new recruits, UFC fighter Ronda Rousey (the first female Expendable) has the action moves, while Antonio Banderas is great as a fast-talking would-be team member (sounding, at times, like his Puss In Boots character from Shrek), who will do anything to join this band of mercenaries.
